Juan Rovalo
Juan is a skilled ecologist and cross-disciplinary strategist with 20 years of experience in ecologically integrated design, nature-positive projects, scientific studies, ecological assessments, biomimicry, and geospatial analysis. He focuses on enhancing and restoring ecosystem processes and creating functional, multi-benefit landscapes, and has a successful track record managing multi-faceted projects in 10 countries and 15+ unique ecological regions. Juan has been featured in Fast Company (Biomimicry Challenge: TOA Uses Fungi to Reimagine Sustainable Neighborhoods) applying biomimicry to the concept of ecodistricts for city planning. Juan also led the design of a biomimicry exhibit for the Asteroide B612 Diseño regenerativo y balances ambientales exhibit at the Modern Art Museum in Mexico City experienced by over 50,000 visitors.
Juan holds a Bachelors degree in Biology from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. During this course of biological studies, Juan worked in a variety of research laboratories, including neuroscience, biotechnology, ecology, botany and mycology. To deepen the opportunity to apply biology, Juan also studied an MBA at the Universidad Iberoamericana as well as holds the title of Certified Biomimicry Professional from Biomimicry 3.8 following the completion of their inaugural two-year biomimicry training program and completed the Ms at the ASU. This unique coupling of educational endeavors compels Juan to relay his scientific foundation and passion for the environmental topics in a way that is complemented with his sensibility towards social and economical dimensions for each project. Now, Rovalo works as Chief Ecologist at Perkins&Will, where he works to restore ecosystems and habitats with strategies based in ecological science.
30 Years of Building for Regeneration
For nearly three decades, we’ve been defining and advancing the idea of “living buildings”—structures that are self-sufficient, resilient, and ecologically elegant. These lessons now shape the foundation of our teaching.
The School was born from lived experience: a deep investigation into what works, what heals, and what sustains. We teach not just what’s new—but what’s next.
